Ethical Behavior In the recent past, you must have heard of numerous examples of legal and ethical lapses on the part of companies and the part of their business executives. So much so that it sparked a debate of emphasis on ethics in business education. Not surprisingly, in many marketing and business textbooks, a chapter on ethics is one of the recent editions. What is ethical behavior and why is this concept so tricky to grasp? Ethics refers to the moral principles or values that govern the conduct of an individual or a group and ethical behavior can be different from what is considered legal. The latter is more easily understood because it is the written law of the land. Ethics on the other hand, consists of unwritten rules that may go beyond what the law dictates. To make matters more complicated, while law is the same for everyone, ethics may vary from person to person. Marketing tobacco products is legal, but considering the fact that is known to cause lung cancer, many abhor this practice. While some may argue that marketers are satisfying the needs of their customers, other believe it is unethical to market a product that is known to kill. Even though that happens over a long duration, still others would like to make the marketing of tobacco outright illegal. So, in some ways, what may be ethical to some is unethical to many and bordering on illegal for others. But regardless, there is no denying that there is a need for more ethical practices and there are several factors that can reduce unethical decision making. Some of these are as follows:
