Purpose of the taste test

I use this taste test activity to promote
my business department to potential
Grade 8 students when they are
touring the school.

It is designed to get them excited
about taking Business in High School.

However, I have also used it
successfully in marketing and business
classes to explain why businesses do
taste tests.

Preparation before the Taste Test

You will need to purchase 3 different types of licorice (Twizzlers, Nibs, No Sugar
Added, Sweet and Sour Filled Twists, No Name etc.) Your school should cover the
costs as this is designed to promote the school and your department to
prospective students.
 I have also done this with other candies like jujubes, gummy worms etc.
 You will need three paper plates to hand out the three types of candy. Write the
letters A, B, C on the plates so that students understand which Brand they are
eating.
 Print off enough copies of the Survey Slide (#13) to cover the number of students
in the class. Note: there are 4 surveys on the slide to cut down on the number of
photocopies. You will need to cut them out.
 Students will fill-in their choice of candy on this sheet and in the end a helper
student will tally the results.

Alternatively, you could just survey the class with a show of hands but sometimes
the secret ballot is better for the shy grade 8 students.
