Island Hopping: A Personal Story Shortly before my Uncle A.J. died last year, he shared with my wife and me a story about his World War II experience. He told us that Iwo Jima got all the hype, but the Battle of Saipan was the bloodiest battle in the South Pacific. One evening on Saipan, he and his group had fought all night and had to run several miles back to camp where they collapsed on the ground. In his extreme exhaustion, he could hear his name being called. “Jackson! Jackson!” He called back and was taken to the tent of the colonel in charge. Uncle A.J. was the leader of the group that handled explosives, so the commanders of the local forces wanted to talk with him. They led him to a miniature mock-up of a nearby island: Tinian. Uncle A.J. was informed where the Japanese forces were set up on Tinian and where the Allied fleet was stationed in the ocean. They asked Uncle A.J. how they should run their assault on Tinian so that the landing forces could advance to this critical island. Uncle A.J. pointed out that they would anticipate a frontal attack from the side where the fleet was anchored. So Uncle
