Jia Zheng ID:111381607 Lab 5-e/m change to mass ratio Introduction: The purpose of this experiment is to understand and observe the motion of electron in a magnetic field by obtaining the measurement of the charge over mass. As we understand, an electron beam will be accelerated through a known voltage and then ejected into a magnetic field of known strength. The reason for that it is magnetic field will travel in a circle. We will use the radius of this circle to determine the charge-to-mass ratio (e/m) of the electron. The centripetal motion and force propel it to move in a circular motion, and it’s all explained while using the helmholtz coil. Producer: 1. The lab materials were include 1 e/m apparatus consisting of, 1 set of Helmholtz coils (wires & mount),2 DC power supplies (one for current in coils, one for accelerating voltage), 1 vacuum tube (with some low-pressure Helium gas),1 electron gun, and 1 light-blocking hood. 2. First, use ruler to measure the diameter of the Helmholtz coil 3. Turn on the apparatus, and waited for 30 second for it to boot up. 4. Turn on the voltage and current knobs until you see a green circle of light illustrating the electron beam. 5. Set the accelerating voltage and current until the beam is centered on the smallest marker.
