Introduction of Terrorism in Mindanao Terrorists infestation of the Mindanao region Jose Calida, the Solicitor General of Philippines, reported that over 20 militant groups operate in Mindanao The militant groups are terrorist gangs associated with the Middle East based ISIS terror group (Andolong, 2017). These groups include the Rajah Solaiman Islamic Movement, the Ansar Dawiah Fi Filibbin group, the Jama’at Ansar Khilafa, and the Sulu faction of the Abu Sayyaf Group

Introduction of Terrorism in Mindanao Mindanao is always Engulfed by Black Flags and Smoke The Mindanao skyline is synonymous with black flags and dark smoke Militant groups affiliated to the ISIS hoist these black flags (Kraft, 2003) The dark smoke results from bombs and conflicts within the region The Maute group and the Abu Sayyaf group have a stronghold in the region

Introduction of Terrorism in Mindanao The Marawi Crisis The Marawi siege began in May 20, 2017 and is still ongoing The conflict began after government forces engaged militant groups to capture Isnilon Hapilon, the Abu Sayyaf leader (Tan, 2017) Mahmud bin Ahmad, an unscrupulous businessman from Malaysia, sponsored the Marawi Siege to the tune of $ 600,000 from the ISIS group The funding was used to purchase firearms, food and other supplies required by the militants

Introduction of Terrorism in Mindanao The Davao City Crisis The Davao crisis occurred in September 2, 2016 An improvised explosive devise exploded in a night market The crisis claimed 15 innocent lives and injured over 70 people (Daniel, 2017) The Abu Sayyaf militant group claimed responsibility of this attack

Introduction of Terrorism in Mindanao The General Santos City Crisis The General Santos City crisis occurred on September 16, 2014 The explosion was also an improvised explosive device (Toros, 2012) The explosion was organized by the Jemmaah Islamiyah groups (an associate terror group of Al-Qaeda), the BIFF and ISIS. One person died during the incident, while eight others got injured.
