Planning and Pricing a Memory Upgrade Research your own computer or a lab computer to determine how much and what type of memory is currently installed and how much the system can support. Then research the web to determine the total cost of a memory upgrade so you can max out the total memory on your system. Take into account the maximum memory your motherboard, processor, and operating system can support. You can keep the cost down by using the modules you already have, but don’t forget to match important features of the modules already installed.
