Assignment I Race and Class Differences in Print Media Portrayals of Crack Cocaine and Methamphetamine Race Issues Race was considered a bigger issue in the 1920’s to 1980’s according to this article, Chinese immigrants were more associated with primary opiate users, African Americans were considered “cocaine fiends” and Mexicans were more associated with marijuana. While in the mid-1980’s poor urban African Americans and Hispanics were identified as the crack users and the poor rural Whites have been portrayed as the primary meth users. (Potter and Kappeler, 1998; Tonry, 2004). Methamphetamine From the article, methamphetamine was mentioned as being used by “lower-class whites residing in rural areas”. The second person listed methamphetamine as a “ghetto” problem. I personally never heard of it being portrayed as those.
