DRESS TO IMPRESS 2 Dress to Impress From dress and cap to scrubs, nursing uniforms have evolved over the years. Uniforms have come a long way since the debate many years ago, on whether the uniform was proper or not. Wearing a uniform has implications such as, and identifying medical staff and boosting confidence in the nurse and patient. Today uniforms are a standard in professionalism in the work environment. Professionalism includes the characteristics or qualities a person has, does, and practices. Professionalism creates a positive image of nursing. Do you feel that you lose a part of your identity when wearing a uniform by blending in with all nurses? Do you feel more like your authentic self in your own clothes? Or do you feel like you gain status and confidence while wearing nursing uniform Uniform and My Identity When I am in my nursing uniform I feel more confident and empowered to go to work, like a professional. I know that am skilled in an area of work and with that I have purpose and drive. I feel like I am ready for anything. I remember my first day at work as a CNA, during orientation looking across the table seeing nurses with badges that had RN on them and I remember thinking I want one of those. I want to prove that I can do that too. I do not feel like I lose a part of my identity, but I feel like I gain a part of it. Almost like I was meant for this. I feel like I am me in whatever I am wearing. I am the same person whether I am wearing my clothes or my scrubs. I also like the nurse uniform because it is more comfortable than my regular
