1. What types of health services are provided by the health care profession you selected? Medical coding is what translates the healthcare provider’s report of a visit, which is used by the medical biller to make a claim for the insurance company so they know what to charge for the patient. The two system’s of medical coding include are the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT). ICD is the standard international system of classification statistics and it is used in over 100 countries. According to the World Health Organization, 70% of the world’s health expenditures are allocated through ICD. 2. What educational requirements are necessary to earn a degree or certificate in the field? The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) offers various medical coding certifications including Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), and Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P) credentials. For the CCA exam, you simply need a high school diploma and at least 6 months of experience in a healthcare organization. To receive the CCS or CCS-P specialized credential, they ask that you have at least 3 years in a hospital or a physician- based setting. They also recommend that you complete coursework in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical terminology, and pharmacology. Getting certified
