Eunise Olvera LTAM 1100-003 Professor Sofia Paiva March 21, 2019 Cultural Event #1 The first cultural event I attended was Dr. Barbara Weinstein’s talk in Fretwell, room 113. During the talk, Dr. Weinstein spoke about the Rubber Boom in the Amazon and how it affected the lives of the people around it. She mentioned that in a typical textbook, the boom is explained in a very brief manner and it is told that the British stole a bunch of rubber trees to plant in their own colonies and took over the rubber economy therefore, the Amazon rubber economy collapsed immediately. Upon her research, Dr. Weinstein found that it was much more than that. She explained that there were different aspects to the rubber economy, one being the origin. There was a large demand for rubber in 1890 due to the bicycle craze as well as in 1895 when automobiles were introduced. At the time rubber was already a main export for Brazil and small manufacturing systems had been created. Another aspect of the rubber economy was the existence of regional elites.
