Eunise Olvera LBST 2102 Carolina Oliveira 02/25/19 Weekly Response 5 This week’s reading, “African Culture in Brazilian Art”, is an article by Abdias Nascimento published in the “Journal of Black Studies”. In this article, the author elaborates on the culture of the Africans and explains how well they demonstrated artistic tendencies. Because the black people in Brazil were oppressed and enslaved, they couldn't develop their culture as they would have if they were free. Due to this oppression, history played a major part in the development of Brazil’s culture. At a point in time, the blacks made an attempt to fight back and bring an end to the repression but whites maintained their ideas of superiority and continued to belittle them. Although the whites in Brazil forbade the blacks from participating in certain things which would demonstrate their artistry, a few blacks still managed to be recognized for their talents and
