PERSONAL REFLECTION 2 Personal Reflection Nursing is still considered the most trusted profession today (Brenan, 2018). Why then, does nursing struggle to reflect a positive image? This class has sparked my curiosity into the deep issues of the nursing image. It has been very beneficial and educational, but also led me to ask more questions. I hope that I can be a better nurse that will boldly reflect the true image of nursing: intelligent, independent, evidence-based practice, dedicated, and knowledge (Kalisch, Begeny, & Neumann, 2007). I will accomplish this by setting strategies as a guide to promote the positive image of nursing. Image issues This issue that affected me the most had to do with the image of men in nursing. I remember learning about women’s suffrage and those issues years ago, but this is the first time I have heard of anything having such a big impact on men. In an earlier video a male nurse had mentioned not having a role model to look up to (Ryerson University, 2008). This touched my heart. He then went on to add that he was always being asked why he is not going back to school to become a doctor (Ryerson University, 2008). This motivates me in my nursing practice that no matter what type of patients I have or people I work and collaborate with to still treat everyone with respect and show them dignity in a nonjudgmental way.
