Bryce Feery 1/22/2019 PHL 329 Reflection Paper 1 The first of the three landmark cases that altered our understanding of our place in the Universe was the discovery that the worlds revolved around the sun and not the other way around. Originally proposed by Copernicus, this particular case completely went against the observable world model that had been the basis of our understanding of how the universe was. It no long situated mankind at the center of the cosmos, and it uprooted the long held belief that the planets moved in perfect, circular paths. It shifted the supposed perfect nature of the universe. The second of these cases would be when Newton revolutionized the laws of motion in the Universe. Newton helped to explain the role of gravity and in doing so created an air of mechanism to the universe. This in turn developed the idea of Deism. That God is essentially a divine clockmaker who does not intervene, and the world simply functions as it does by law and order. It created doubt in the idea that God was always there and always ready to help. Finally,
