Eunise Olvera UWRT 1004 Dr. Jan Rieman 09/11/18 1061 Reading Response: Literacies In our book, “ Writing About Writing ”, an alphabetical literacy sponsor is described as someone or something that aided you in your process of learning how to read and write. Throughout my childhood, the largest impact on my literacy was my sister. Because she is four years older than me, I was able to watch her learn to read and write through school as well as learn to speak English. When it was my turn to begin school, my sister helped me improve my English and also helped me on my homework, which on occasion required me to write about myself. I would also consider my elementary school AIG teacher as my literacy sponsor because of the fact that she critiqued and improved my first pieces of writing. She assigned work that would not only challenge me but also increase my vocabulary and reading level. Sandra Cisneros explains that she developed her love for reading and writing through her older brothers’ refusal to play with her which led her to spend more time alone. I believe her loneliness helped her develop her own literacy sponsor because as she said, it allowed her to read and prepare herself. Because Cisneros’ father was not fluent in English, it illustrates that a literacy sponsor does not primarily have to be a family member. Cisnero developed plenty of other literacy sponsors through her schooling and education.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
