Eunise Olvera UWRT 1004 Dr. Jan Rieman 09/06/18 Writing Studio 1: The Rhetorical Situation The rhetorician, LLoyd F. Bitzer, developed an idea known as the rhetorical situation which, to this day, impacts every kind of writing created. As I read the passages about this theory, I understood it to be the reason in which you write which consists of the issue at hand, the audience, and a set of constraints. It uses a variety of methods to please, persuade, influence, or convince a certain audience. Bitzer also describes the rhetorical situation as a way to “alter reality”. The theory overall provides a purpose to your writing. Without recognizing the rhetorical situation in a text, we wouldn’t understand to whom it was written for or why it was written. Bitzer asks “What is the nature of the situation in which a philosopher ‘does philosophy’?” This question really aided me in seeing that a rhetorical situation has mostly to do with reasoning and finding out how it’ll affect the audience you’re writing for.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
