The Glass Menagerie: Speech In the story called The Glass Menagerie written by Tennessee Williams, we are introduced to 4 main characters. Laura, Tom, Amanda and Jim. Today I will be focusing on Amanda. The quote is from Scene 6. In this Scene, Amanda and Laura are finally going to meet the gentlemen caller. Amanda had worked hard to make the apartment look good for the gentleman caller. She had dressed in a girlish outfit for that day. Laura on the other hand was quite anxious she had heard the gentlemen callers name and she started to question if it was someone she had known. The doorbell rings and Laura and Amanda argue about who’s going to open the door. Eventually Laura opens the door and meets Jim. She rushes off after introducing herself. Amanda however meets Jim and imposes her girlish southern charm. Immediately she starts to introduce Jim to her past. She mentions her relationship and how she was such a caring wife to now being abandoned. She associates her own downfall in life with a system of “gracious living”. Gracious living is a life lived with elegance and comfort. This kind of living co-relates to the Southern charm Amanda pretends to show because “gracious living” was common in the Old Southern times. This contrasts blatantly with they way of living in St. Louis. Therefore, this shows us that Amanda’s nostalgia and reminiscences for the old world may be related to the fact that her family has not coped and succeeded in the modern world they live in.
