MGMT 305: Term Paper The Problem with All-Stars (1) In the Adam Grant’s podcast “The Problem with All-Stars”, Grant mentions that having an entire team of superstars can be a total disaster. I observed this in 2011 when the Miami Heat crumbled in the NBA Finals, a series they were heavily favored to win….on paper at least. After listening to the podcast, it has truly made me understand that sometimes it isn’t the best thing to have All-Stars filling every position on your team. Having an entire team of all- stars could end up being a disaster because of the types of characteristics that revolve around making a team. The specific characteristics that are mentioned in this paper are task roles, team composition, and task characteristics. Concerning the task role, Shane Battier took on a maintenance type of role on the Miami Heat by being the glue amongst many of the players while continuing to show and prove his value on the court. For example, when Battier explained to LeBron James to guard Kevin Durant by making him shoot over his left shoulder instead of his right. Battier was able to fill that role in a manner that helped his team achieve its goals while also maintaining a relationship with his teammates, especially the best player in the world in James. Normally a maintenance role could be assigned, but in the case of the NBA, those who do the “dirty work” like diving for loose balls or taking the charge in the paint usually understand they have that role. Normally a player is signed to a team knowing they are filling a certain role on that team and nine times out of ten times, those players like Shane Battier know what type of task they are getting into. For example, he was known to be a defensive pest on the court, but the defensive efficiency went UP across the board when he was on the court, not just his stats. A benefit from Battier distinguishing clear roles in the beginning is that the team members would

know what is expected of them and that could have a greater impact on efficiency. The next characteristic is team composition where the team members should be able and should be willing to work in a team environment while also providing needed their own technical skills. The saying of “having too many chiefs, not enough Indians” goes the same on the basketball court and also in the board room. If too many All-Stars exist, there is a greater possibility that the roles and individuals on the team won’t be as heterogeneous in order to maximize interdependence within the group. There are competencies and behaviors of effective team members when there is good composition, but the Miami Heat were lacking in some of the areas like comforting and communicating prior to Battier’s arrival. Shane Battier came into the mix in 2011 and changed up the dynamic by adding some of these competencies into the huddle couples with some of his own skills. Last, we have task characteristic and task complexity where many individuals with different skills and expertise can perform more specialized roles.
