Unit 2: Critical Thinking Assignment | Wint | 2 Learning Exercise 1 - Chapter 4 Research the relationship between job design and a topic related to either employee stress or work/life balance. Using information from this text, from class lecture, and from your research, prepare a one-page summary of best practices that companies have used to manage stress or work/life issues. 1. How does job design affect either employee stress or work/life balance? The job design determines and sets the stage for what the employee will conduct in the company, task, duties, and responsibility. The job design does not only illustrate what the employ will do daily during office hours, but also what deadlines will the employ have to meet, how much responsibility, duties and tasks will the employ need to cover and delegate. Understanding their role of the employee and how much is expected will determine how many weekends will the employee need to sacrifice, how many late nights or early mornings will the employee to need to plan around his/her personal life. If the job needs traveling then how much of it and how often or how many deadlines will the employee need to worry about. The goal is for the employee to be passionate in what they are doing because along with their competencies it will drive work performance through the roof. Thus, any job does come with stress when trying to meet deadlines or cooperate with other employees also, balancing life and work can be stressful itself. HR and management need to evaluate when too much is too much and understand what is a good balance between work and life outside of work. 2. Are certain job design approaches better than others for addressing employees’ stress or work/life balance? Why? Each job design approach is different to help employees balance their work and life, also depending on how large the company is, the approach will work better than others. Change job

Increase responsibility is another approach where you give employees a higher level of responsibilities, allowing the employee to participate in decisions that affect their work can be rewarding for an employee, or giving them access to speak on concerns within the company.
