Nadiya Abramyuk Bio205 LAB Instructor: Faiza Peetz Heart sounds Introduction The purpose is to identify the valves and the sounds each makes, study the structures of atrioventricular valves, and identify what causes the heart murmurs. In addition, learn of the differences between pre and post exercise, of inhale and exhale for BPM, as well as, the time between wave and first heart sound and HS amplitude. The two dominating sounds out of four high amplitude sounds are the first and second heart sounds which completes the cardiac cycles. These types of heart sounds are corresponding with the opening and closing of valves and blood flow inside the heart while the cardiac cycle occurs. By using a stethoscope, the sounds can be heard by placing it on the anterior surface of the chest, located over the heart. The first and second heart sounds have a distinctive sharp sound while the second heart sound is followed by the third, but having an amplitude that is much lower making it hard to be recognized. As for the fourth heart sound, the amplitude is so low that most of the time it can’t be detected. For this experiment, we will develop segmentation and detection of heart sounds. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
