Lab 1-1 Separation of Mixtures: Chromatography Question: Which water soluble dyes are most like water and which permanent ink dyes are most like acetone? Procedure: 1.) Before handling chromatography materials, put on surgical latex gloves to avoid oil contamination. Also put on safety goggles and an apron. 2.) Cut 4 sheets of chromatography paper, about 15 cm each. 3.) Draw a light pencil line across the width of each of the chromatography papers, about 1 cm from the end of each paper. 4.) Deposit a small amount of water soluble ink from a marker on two of the cut chromatography sheets (a different ink color for each sheet) centered on the pencil line and allow it to completely dry. 5.) Record the original ink color in your notebook. 6.) Once the ink dries, place another droplette of the same ink on the opposite side of the chromatography paper. 7.) Clean 4 25ml test tubes. 8.) Place about 2 ml of distilled water into the base of 2 separate test tubes. 9.) Check that the ink spots are dry, and fold each chromatography paper lengthwise to help prop it up in the test tube. 10.) Place the chromatogram strips with water soluble ink into their corresponding test tubes, with the ink spot just barely above the meniscus of the water. 11.) Once the water has stopped traveling up the paper and the ink is fully separated into 3- 4 different color bands, remove the chromatography paper and allow it to dry.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
