THEORY-PRACTICE GAP Theory-Practice Gap One major issue we run into in practice today is that what we observe in clinical bedside practice, rarely ever matches our textbooks on how the clinical situation should “look.” There is much uncertainty the fills the minds of young nurses as they transition from classroom to bedside nursing. Throughout the clinical setting, situations occur that do not match up with nursing theory and research, resulting in an environment of uncertainty. This vagueness is related to a lack of understanding between nursing theory, and how to apply nursing theory into clinical practice (Rolfe, 1993). Approaches based on theoretical ways of providing care are often impractical in the practice setting. The incongruence between how nursing theories envision care being provided, and what happens in real life clinical practice has created that area of limitation within the nursing discipline. This limitation is what we refer to as the “theory-practice gap.” This gap that is present is a result of the “murky” area that lies between nursing theory and nursing practice and is often influenced by authority trying to determine how things are supposed to be, but have “lost perspective of the some fundamental aspects of the practice for which they are attempting to legislate” (Sellman, 2010). There is a lack of understanding present when defining the characteristics between the different roles of the nursing theorist, the clinician, and the nursing researcher and how each role individual contributes to the theory-practice gap. When evaluating their contributions to nursing knowledge, we must decipher the difference between their roles. Nursing theorists play a vital role by providing the fundamentals of the nursing discipline, the mission (Meleis, 2016).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
