Chapter 1 Humans and the Microbial World Overview This chapter is an introduction to microbiology with a discussion of some of the major events that have been important in the development of the science. The origin and discovery of microorganisms is explored and the concept of two cell types, prokaryotic and eukaryotic, is introduced. The impact of microorganisms on humans is explored as well as the roles of these organisms in the biological world. The three domains are introduced and various kinds of microorganisms included in them are described. Binomial nomenclature is described, and viruses, obligate intracellular parasites not included in the three domains, are introduced. The chapter concludes with a discussion of microbial size. Learning Objectives After studying the material in this chapter, you should be able to: 1. Define microbiology and describe its scope. 2. Define microorganism. 3. Describe the environmental conditions under which the first microbes lived. 4. Explain why microorganisms have been successful. 5. Describe the diversity of microorganisms. 6. Briefly describe the contributions of the following people to the field of microbiology. 1
