February 26, 2019 POLS 441A Can Social Protests influence Immigration Policy? Undocumented Immigration was not a major social and political issue of the United States until 2006. In fact, among Latino voters immigration was not an issue that ranked in the top 5 categories. Protests are an organization of people who oppose to a ideal, policy, social issue, etc (Battaglini, p. 485). It is the hope of protesters that government officials will be made aware of the social issues the communities of the United States are facing. In 2006, the introduction of HR 4437 placed increased sanctions on undocumented immigrants. It was the hope of the protesters to increase awareness on the increasing difficulties placed on undocumented immigrants. By increasing awareness it might embolden the public to pressure the government to rid its policy in favor of one that aids immigrants. Opponents of protests argue that it is not an efficient way of expressing concerns to the government. That it takes far too long to reach the minds of government officials. Instead it causes the public and/or government officials to use certain protests for their own benefit. Latino immigration, specifically, has been
