Long-Term Memory Storage What determines if information gets stored in long-term memory (LTM)? Memory storage may be affected by depth of processing. Levels of Processing Model (Craik and Lockhart, 1972) Levels of processing is a unitary store model. Memory is a single store. STM is highly activated LTM memories. 2

Long-Term Memory Storage Levels of Processing Model This model is an alternative to Atkinson and Shiffrin’s. It provides an explanation of how LTM storage is achieved. “Depth” of processing, not just repetition, determines likelihood of long-term storage. Deeper processing → better memory traces Depth of processing differs based on type of processing: the way a stimulus is processed. 3

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
