Geometric Optics Lab Jordan Lane Dr. Mohottala/Thomas Gleason Partners: Joe Esce, Isaac Gadikian, Nick VanMater 12/08/16 Abstract: The purpose of this experiment was to study how the shape and the material of different lenses and mirrors affected the path of light rays. By studying these paths, the laws of geometric optics were proven. Introduction : In this experiment, the behavior of light was observed and studied by using lenses and mirrors. According to the laws of geometric optics, rays of light will travel in a straight line until it encounters a new material. When the ray of light reaches this new material, the light will either reflect or refract. The Law of Reflection states that the angle between the ray of light and the normal line, an imaginary line perpendicular to the new material’s surface, θ i , will be equal to the angle of the incident ray, θ r , the ray reflecting off of the surface, and the normal line. Equation 1: θ i = θ r Equation 1 represents the Law of Reflection and the relationship between the two angles. The experiment also studied the Law of Refraction, or Snell’s Law. This law states that the path of the ray that is transmitted through the material will be directly related to the angle of the second ray that is refracted through the second material.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
