Professor Kataoka LING 123 April 15, 2019 Reading Response Paper #2 According to the result of vervet monkeys’ alarm calls study by Cheney and Seyfarth’s (1985) some of the circumstances changed the way monkeys make the alarm calls. This indicates that alarm calls are influenced by social context, and that there may be some ‘cheating’ or reciprocal system in the form of the withholding of information. The question is that if we know for sure if monkeys are intentionally suppressing these calls. To answer this question, concepts of intentional communication, theory of mind, and sense of self needs to be discovered. The purpose of this paper is to review studies on sense of self in primates. For the final steps in testing the existence of sense of self ability in primates, they devote to the learning that occurs when an animal interacts with itself in front of mirror.
