Unit 6: Discussion - Mental Health 1 Unit 6: Discussion - Mental Health Looking at this logically without any research this is expected, the youth more than ever are very integrated with society and the issues that are going on. Due to social media and technology they are well aware of all the mass shootings that are happening in schools, churches and other public areas. They are well aware of each bombing that is occurring around the world, refugees that are seeking asylum at the border, global warning, sexual harassment movements, bullying based upon sexual preference or sexual identity, and cyber bullying. It’s no wonder children are dealing with depression, and above it all there is still a stigma on speaking up or seeking help. Open communication to the youth, access to resources and removing the negative stigma on depression and talking about it needs to be conquered. Louisiana Adolescent Mental Health Facts The statistics on adolescents and mental health in Louisiana are alarming and suggest not just a rising problem, but rather a serious crisis. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services have complied a survey where 32% of high students both male and female report to feel sad or hopeless almost every day for a period of time where the U.S. as a whole report a 31%. The same high school students had a total of 18% both male and female student reported to have seriously considered suicide where the U.S. as a whole stands at 17%. The survey continue with 17% of those students attempting suicide more than once and the U.S. reports 7%, finally, 8% were treated from their suicide attempt where the U.S. stands at 2%.
