The immigrants from Ireland, Italy and Portugal brought their culinary customs to New England in the 1880s. Single pot dinners of meat and fish were turned into stew and then with the Irish and British immigrants boiling their Braised and pickled beef which is now known as New England Boiled Dinner. 2. Discuss the types of and importance of root vegetables in this region. Winters were very hard and root vegetables like beets, celeriac, carrots, parsnips, rutabagas, turnips, onions, white and sweet potatoes were used as staples for the harsh cold weather.
