Salmonella is a bacterium that is mainly in the intestine and caused by contaminated food or water. There are many risk factors that are associated with contracting salmonella. Risk factors are a behavior, environmental exposure, or inherent human characteristic that is associated with an important health condition. (Merrill, 2017). Travel is one risk factor. International travel to developing countries with poor sanitation increases the risk that a person will be exposed to salmonella. Owning a reptile or pet bird is a risk factor for being exposed to salmonella. Some birds and reptiles are carriers of the bacteria which can increase your risk of transmission . Taking antacids can lower your stomach’s acidity, which can allow salmonella bacteria to survive. Immune problems such as malaria, sickle cell disease and AIDS can increase your risk of contracting salmonella by altering your immune system. Certain birds and reptiles can carry salmonella bacteria which can increase your risk of transmission. Salmonella are usually transmitted to humans by eating foods contaminated with animal feces. Transmission is usually person-to-person or animal-to-person via the fecal–oral route, through ingestion of the organisms via contaminated or improperly cooked foods. (

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
