CRJ Paper 1 - 2/18/19 This article by The Independent World News on February 13 th , 2019 talks about fatal shootings involving the police in America, and how despite reform efforts, the statistics have stayed virtually the same over the 4 years covered in this article. The article states that in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, the numbers of people fatally shot by police in America were 995, 963, 987 and 998 respectively. All 4 years recorded continue to hover right under the 1,000 mark, with not much variation up or down. The demographic statistics of the shooting victims show that over the 4 year stretch, approximately 45% were white men, 23% were black men, 16% were Hispanic men, and Women in general made up 5%. People in mental distress made up 25% of the total number. 54% were armed with guns, and 4% were completely unarmed. According to this article, the statistics above were gathered by The Washington Post. The Washington Post started tracking the number of shootings that occur in the United States back in 2014, after the Michael Brown incident in Ferguson Missouri.
