Philippines declares Dengue Epidemic as Death Surge The Philippines declared the country’s outbreak of dengue to be a national epidemic as the flare-up of the mosquito- borne disease has caused 622 deaths since January. The Philippine Department of Health said it had recorded 146,062 cases of dengue from January through July 28, and 98% more than during that same period in 2018, according to Associated Press. Similarly, the DOH, declared a national dengue epidemic as cases of the mosquito-borne disease continued to rise in the country. 622 people died due to dengue as of July 20 this year. Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said that declaring a national epidemic is important “to identify where a localized response is needed and to enable local government units to use their Quick Response Fund to address the epidemic situation.” The DOH in July had declared a national dengue alert, but the status was raised to epidemic to “level up the response” against the viral
