Jessica Martinez Art history survey 1: 114 September 09,2019 Kerrigan The lid of the Sarcophagus of Pakal that was created during 683 CE. The lid from the sarcophagus, came from his tomb in the temple of the inscriptions, in palenque mexico. akals Sarcophagus lid was made of one single stone.This sarcophagus lid was made from limestone and measures 12 '1 ½” x 7’1 ½’’. It is also known that the stone weighs about seven tons. The tomb was re-discovered in 1952.There are carvings on the top of the sarcophagus as well as the sides, and bottom. Like the Egyptians the Sarcophagus of Pakal was created for him as a dedication to a great ruler. There are also similarities with the carvings on the sarcophagus that are known as hieroglyphics similar to those used in Egypt. All along the border of the sarcophagus there are references to heavenly beings as well as what is happening in the carving. The viewer's eye is directed from the center where Pakal is shown to the very top of the stone where we see the top of a tree like figure.
