Human Resources Discussions Discussion 1 Though I would imagine it would be hard to have most jobs if you simply didn’t “like people” I do not believe it is the most important factor of a Human Resource Managers job. I would imagine a blanket statement of “not liking people” would make an HR Managers job much more difficult, I believe that HR managers like many other managers need skills like leadership, conflict resolution, intuition, and work ethic, more than they necessarily need to like people. Our text shared with us that many of the functions of HR go beyond human interaction, things like planning recruitments and selection, require good people skills but not necessarily a liking for people. Also part of the job like compensation, benefits, health and safety (Rue ,4) may require little interaction at all. I think more over a key to human resources is empathy, and putting others first, as well as a great understanding of many aspects of the company outside of the HR department. 2.Downsizing is the laying off of large numbers of managerial staff and other employees. This is done as a way to reduce costs to a business. Another way to reduce costs is outsourcing. Outsourcing is contracting with another company who specializes in one aspect of your business to complete that task it can be very involved like transportation or production, or less involved like payroll or cleaning. Rightsizing however is a more proactive approach so that downsizing is not necessary. It is a constant approach to looking at all critical employees and their needs. Reengineering is a fundamental redesign of the human resources of a company often called management restructuring. 3.According to our text some of the things HR managers can do to become more familiar with the organizations business include: knowing the company’s strategy and business plan, knowing the industry, support business needs, spend more time with line people, keep their hand on the pulse of the organization, and learn and calculate costs and solutions in hard numbers. Essentially the text suggests managers become very involved and learn as much as they can about the organization as a whole from the bottom to the top. 4. The best way to convince upper management of your need to be involved in a company’s strategic planning is to show them what you can bring to the table and why it is just as important for HR managers to be involved in all aspects of the business not just the management of labor. Some ways to do this is to get involved with other part of the organization, fiscally and managerially. Things like finding way to save the organization money, as well as sharing how human resources play a key role in all planning aspects of an organization.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
