I know a lot of people who try to avoid confrontation at all costs. I sometimes lean in this direction myself. Of course there are times in life when confrontation is inevitable, and that is when we must use skill in techniques of confrontation. The book Handling Verbal Confrontation states, “that one of the major inadequacies of our culture is our inability to verbally confront one another properly and respectfully. Very few people recognize it as a problem, even fewer know what to do about it.”[1] This is so true. When confrontation does arise we must not let our emotions get in the way of having a constructive conclusion. Confrontation does not have to be a negative thing. Good things can arise from two individuals laying out how they feel even if they disagree. I have learned in my experiences that the attitude you take into an argument or discussion truly influences the outcome of said discussion. The most important thing to remember
