Experiment #8Making Soap: Base-Catalyzed hydrolysis of a TriglycerideMyriam SlatteryPartner: Kelly MaurerCHEM 102L- 04 March 28, 2019Abstract:
The purpose of this experiments was to perform saponification reaction to create a simplesoap out of a vegetable oil. In addition to that it the second purpose was to take the soap created and test the emulsifying properties of the soap in hard and acidic water. Overall it was found that the walnut oil soap versus the avocado oil soap possessed some different characteristics. First of all the avocado soap carried more a green undertone where are the walnut soap was more of a tan/off white color to it. The walnut oil soap also had more of a creamy texture and the avocado oil soap was more grainy. As for the emulsifying properties of the walnut soap, the soap mixed with the water dissolved in almost all the test tubes and gave the pH to be around a 12. Background: Fatty carboxylic acid have long tails and depending on if they are single or double bonds.
