In the United States, one in five American youth and approximately 44 million adult Americans are affected by one or more mental health disorders. Although mental health issues appear at such high rates, and have a high need for treatment, only about four percent of the budget set forth for health care is allocated to mental health care. There are numerous ways these disorders cost the country money aside from the treatment; for example, lost earnings have reached right around $193.2 billion in the United States alone. Burdens are put on people in other ways as well; for example, the rates of suicide have increased making it the 10 th leading cause of death in the country (Mental Health by Numbers, n.d.). President Trump started by declaring the current state of mental health as an emergency. President Obama started by bringing the seriousness of mental health to the attention of the country. Goal of making mental health easier to obtain by creating a program to make health care coverage more available to those who need it (Ingoglia, 2013). President Bush’s goal was to make people more aware of mental health issues among us and make treatment for those disorders more accessible, including being more available to children. Him and his administration also set requirements for insurance companies on coverage for mental health (Schaefer & Moffit, 2004).
