How Acidic Is Your Vinegar? Gina Zanarini Department of Chemistry, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061 Submitted on September 25, 2007 A solution of sodium hydroxide was prepared and standardized. This sodium hydroxide standard was used to determine the acetic acid content of a sample of vinegar. Molarities were determined using the amount of standard and various volumes. Introduction The acidic content of a sample of vinegar was found by titrating with a strong basic solution with a known concentration. The volumetric method of quantitative analysis was used in this experiment in which a standard solution was necessary. To find the concentration of the standard solution a primary standard was titrated. The acetic acid was known to be neutralized when the indicator changed color. Experimental Procedure Three samples containing 0.4-0.6g of primary standard were weighed to 0.0001g. The samples were put into clean and labeled Erlenmeyer flasks, and masses recorded. The solid was dissolved in 50mL of water, and the samples saved for titration with 0.1M NaOH. In the second part, 300mL of 0.1M NaOH was stored and covered with parafilm in a 500mL Erlenmeyer flask. A buret was then cleaned and rinsed with distilled water until it
