Introduction Water is one of the most common chemical compounds used on earth. All living things need water for survival and water covers close to 75% of the earth. The property of water that we will be looking at is the specific heat. The specific heat of water is a very important property, because the water in your area affects the weather and temperature in your area. Water has a specific heat that is higher than that of air, so while air temperatures can rise and fall quickly, water temperatures take longer to fluctuate. Examining the relationship between the specific heat of water in large and small environments, can help us determine why certain times of the year are the coldest and hottest and why certain areas of the world are colder than others.
