1 Zainab Makki NFS 5140-005,006 October 21, 2013 BRADFORD PROTEIN ASSAY Experiment 6 Abstract: Proteins function for almost all metabolic reactions in the human body. They are formed from various combinations of the 20 amino acids, and folded to primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structures. There are numerous lab techniques in order to determine the protein type. The one used in this lab is the Bradford Protein Assay (BSA). Bradford assay is based on a blue dye (Coomassie Brilliant Blue) that binds to free amino groups in the side chains of amino acids. The experiment is known to give, what appears to be a linear curve. The results show that the over concentration and absorption of the protein are directly proportional. As the concentration, increased, so did the absorption. Though our data show slight error between the 250 and 125 concentrations. Introduction: Proteins are made from single chains of amino acids. There are 20 common amino acids that are found in natural protein. Proteins are the working molecules of the cell; without proteins the cell would not survive. They carry main functions of the cells such as catalyzing a vast range of chemical reactions, providing structure to the cell, controlling the flow of material through the cell membrane, regulate concentrations of metabolites, act as sensors and switches, cause motions, and control gene function. They carry out all the activities encoded with genes. They build the structure of the cell and carry important cellular functions such as processing materials by catalyzing intracellular or extracellular chemical reactions.
