This is based on the past treatment of the black people and the brutality the have continued to face in the hand of the police- The question by the interviewer though is considered to have been made without realizing whathe was saying carried a deeper message, the reader is able to understand what the whites think ofthe black regarding their stand on America and civilization at large. - The interviewer wanted to know whether Coates believed he was safe or free or whether he wassafe, whether he bore the weight of American history on his back.
