MIC 201 Lab #2 Discussion
In Part 1 of lab 2, we exposed 7 TGY and 1 SGA plate to 8 different types of bacteria
sources. In the first TGY plate, we observed it was exposed to air, had 4 colonies that varied in
shades of off-white and yellow, colony shape was circular and clustered near each other. Our
second TGY plate was exposed to soil but due to an unforeseen error, we were given sterile soil.
As discussed in class the soil was borrowed from the Botany Department where they autoclave
their soil to avoid having contaminated plants. The third TGY plate was exposed to the bacteria
under Dan’s shoe. The 70 colonies on this plate were a distorted circular shape, colored light
yellow and ranged in size. I found the highest number of colonies in the TGY plate that was
swabbed with the bottom of Dan’s shoe. Based on the morphology, Dan’s shoe had the biggest
microbial diversity. The last four plates were sectioned off into quadrants. The fourth plate was
exposed to human hair. In my quadrant, I observed 1 colony that ran the length of the hair and
