George HW BushGeorge HW Bush was the 42st president of the United States, previously being Ronald Reagan's vice-president. Hispolicies and ideals derived heavily from his predecessor and were built on them. He was a well-to-do oil tycoonbefore devoting himself to the public. He served as a congressman, emissary to China, ambassador to the UN,director of the CIA, and vice president before becoming president.As president, he oversaw the end of the Cold War and the revitalization of the American military in the Persian GulfWar. He faced a severe economic recession late in his term that severely damaged his popularity, and he lost his bidfor reelection in 1992. Dan Quayle was his Vice-President.Bill ClintonBill Clinton became president in January 1993, as the first democratic president since Jimmy Carter and a self-proclaimed activist. He had a very long domestic agenda. When in office he had a lot of controversial appointments.When a longtime friend, Vince Foster, committed suicide it sparked an escalating inquiry into some banking and realestate ventures involving the president and his wife in the early 1980s. This became known as the Whitewater affair.Economy soared to new levels under his administration though his administration was plagued with scandals such asWhitewater, Monica Lewinsky and subsequent Impeachment trials. He was reelected in 1996 and served through2001. Al Gore was his Vice-President.NAFTASigned in 1993. Established by President Clinton. It opened free trade with Canada and Mexico and allowed the flowof increased goods, services, and jobs across the international borders by lessening and eliminating tariffs. It wasstrongly criticized by organized labor and conservative groups who viewed it as selling American jobs to cheap laboracross the border and that it compromised America's sovereignty. The net gain in jobs resulted due to opening ofMexican markets.
