Keep the Search Outside Our Solar System The search for life in our solar system should be grounded to Earth for the time being. Instead of looking so close to home, the search should turn to finding a planet that meets all of the requirements to host intelligent life by a near-by star. Looking for uni-cellular organisms within the solar system is a waste of tax payers’ money and time. It is unlikely that the general public would truly appreciate the discovery of extraterrestrial microbial life at the expense of education, social security and national defense. Astronomers should be scouring our galaxy for a star similar to our sun, with a planet orbiting it that is similar in size to ours, that has a composition rich in oxygen. If an Earth-like world exists, there is little point in sending unmanned probes to our neighbors hunting for bacteria. Simply put, science should be searching for complex life only outside our solar system. The odds are stacked against finding any other complex life in the solar system. To date, multiple missions set out in exploration have returned no evidence of even simple life on other planets or moons in space. (Rothschild) Questions still remain about Mars, Titan and Europa but scientists agree that their harsh environments could, most likely, only support single cell beings.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
