It is important for teachers to provide opportunities for integrating phonological awareness activities throughout the school day. This is because facilitating the growth of a student’s language skills is an essential component of successful learning and growth. Additionally, phonological awareness is a pre- requisite to reading! Specific listening and speaking activities or strategies teachers could use to help students develop phonemic awareness and develop an understanding about sounds and symbol systems include the following. The first strategy is for educators to implement a system of clapping and/or tapping. Using these methods supports phonemic growth as students are able to break up words into their syllables (K12 Reader, 2019). For example, a student’s teacher can demonstrate this by having them clap twice when saying the word ‘classroom’. It would sound something like (/class/ -clap- /room/ -clap-).
