What can educators do to influence the topic of diversity in education? What other stakeholders can and/or should be involved? The first step educators must take to influence diversity is to recognize and acknowledge diversity which will allow educators to understand and respect the students’ culturally, linguistically, ethnically, and/or racially diverse backgrounds and the contributions these backgrounds can provide to the overall learning environment of the classroom (Aceves & Orosco, 2014). To meet the academic needs of culturally diverse learners, educators must create an inclusive environment that will welcome, affirm, and support these students’ emerging identities while maintaining a connection to their individual identity, racial, ethnic, and/or cultural heritage (Marrun, 2018). Regardless of the role an educator has in the school community, a key component to success is the relationships that he or she builds with students and the promotion and understanding of diversity is no different.
