AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS 2 Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause social, communication and behavorial changes (CDC, 2019). This disorder cannot be diagnosed by just looking at someone. The different learning abilities, behaviors and communication will place the child aside from others. In this final project, we will review ASD, identify the ages or grade levels that ASD can affect, why it may pose a problem or concern in learning, review cognitive and human development processes and innovative teaching and or learning stragegies that can help children with this disability. Three different types of Autism spectrum disorders are Autistic disorder, Asperger Syndrome, and Pervasive developmental disorder – not otherwise specified. Autistic disorder, which is sometimes referred to as the classic autism disorder, will have speech delays, challenges with communication, have noticeable behavioral interests. Some may experience intellectual disability as well. Asperger syndrome relates to a milder form of ASD. You may notice social challenges, unusual behavior, and interests; however, they do not have any issues with communication and or intellectual disability. Pervasive developmental disorder – not otherwise specified is referred to as the atypical autism (PDD-NOS). Some symptoms of both autistic disorder and Asperger syndrome are diagnosed with this type of autism. They have milder or fewer symptoms than someone who has autistic disorder. This disorder if detected can be seen in late infancy or early childhood. Children with autism spectrum disorder may show signs of not responding to their name by 12 months of age, little to no point at objects to show interest by 14 months, no playing "pretend" games (pretend to "feed" a doll) by 18 months, avoid eye contact and want to be alone, troubled understanding other people's feelings or talking about their own feelings, delayed speech and language skills, repeat words or phrases, give answers that do not pertain to the question asked, get frustrated
AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS 3 with minimal changes, flap their hands, rock their body, or spin in circles, and have unusual reactions to the way things sound, smell, taste, look, or feel (CDC, 2019).
