Paper 1: option 2 3/18/05 Many of today’s ethical debates revolve around the sanctity of human life. This issue refers to the importance or value of human life. Many people have different views on issues regarding human life such as the death penalty, abortion, and stem cell research. Most people regard human life very highly and many even go so far as to claim that human life should be protected in all circumstances. These are the people who reject any claims that the destruction of human life can be legitimate. At the core of this argument is the belief that life begins at conception. Those who oppose such an opinion debate the fact that life begins at conception. Instead, they believe that people only deserve their basic human rights at birth. Embryonic stem cell research involves using a blastocyst to create many different types of tissue. This tissue can be used for research purposes or for transplants on patients who would otherwise die while waiting for a donor. Today we have the extremist who are opposed to stem cell research because they claim a blastocyst is a person with a full human right to life. They make this debate based on three claims; humanity, potentiality, continuity. (1) The argument from humanity:
