Site Visit PaperAmber NevilleHUM251- Dr. Elizabeth Ursic04/29/2019Section I Live Art/Music/Drama Expirence and ReviewFor this paper, I chose music for my artistic form.I have always enjoyed Jazz music butit was not as popular for my generations as it was in the 20thcentury, which is when Jazz began.I attended an event at the mesa arts center called “International Jazz Day: A taste of new Orleanscrawfish festival.”The festival featured Donald Harrison, Jesse McGuire, Hijos de Papi,Bernard Wright, Neamen Lyles, Nolaz Band, Jessica Kotu, and guest Chef Louis Rainey.Jazzoriginated in New Orleans and as soon as I walked into the festival the first thing I noticed wasthe smell of the sea food! They were serving Crawfish Etoufee and Jambalaya. These twodishes are famous New Orleans dishes and were thoroughly enjoyed by all.Next I noticed thatthis wasn’t a festival that I was used to where I just wandered around and saw many booths setup.Instead they had the stage in the center and chairs lined up facing the stage while the foodwas surrounding these chairs. There were mostly Solo artists who performed with an occasional add on singer.Theseartists were phenomenal and could sing almost any pitch. What was even more neat was that theinstruments played could also hit almost any note. For instance, the trumpet was being playedand when the singer would stop the trumpet would get higher and higher and higher pitchedwithout sounding awful. In the band, there was also a drum set and a piano as well as atrombone.Rattles were also being pulled out by the singer from time to time. What I foundinteresting is that I did not see or hear any saxophones, which is what I thought the maininstrument in Jazz was. When doing research I learned that the saxophone was not part of the
Jazz family at first. It was not until the saxophone gained popularity amongst the public due toits acceptance into mainstream popular entertainment in the music halls that it became acceptedinto the Jazz family. The singes also brought out the tambourine from time to time, which Ididn’t see on the Jazz instrument list. However this instrument was used by the AfricanAmericans.Jazz was likewise rooted in Southern African American music, yet it was a band ofwhite musicians, billing themselves as the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, who first recorded jazzmusic. By the 1920s, "jazz" was being played around the country by both African American andwhite bands and eventually became the sound we associate with the Roaring Twenties. The Jazz music performed this night showed all the characteristics of this era perfectly. Some of the characteristics being individuality, originality, resulting in a wide diversity of styles.Women were walking right up to the stage and taking the Tambourine from the singer but thisseemed to be okay. The singer would then willingly hand it over and start dancing with the lady.
