Chapter 1 Study Guide Name: ___Tom Parrott___ Chapter 1 Study Guide Key Terms: Communication competency – Having a solid awareness and knowledge about communication that arises from practice, analysis, and studying the theories of comm. Human communication process – Through interaction, the attempt to create a shared reality between the message sender and receiver. Shared realities – When the people who are interacting understand the world in the same way. . they see it through the same eyes. Organization – Individuals working together to accomplish a goal or goals. Organizational communication – The process by which an organization is created and how events within the organization take shape. Guiding Questions: How does the textbook define organizational communication? How would you explain organizational communication to your mother/father? Textbook: Process through which organizations are created and in turn create and shape events. I would explain it as the process by which a group of people interact in order to collectively achieve a goal and to shape and create events. What does it mean to you that organizational communication includes process, people, messages, meaning, and purpose? Give an example from your own experience with each component. Process – Involves many interactions that develop and change.
