Chapter 2 Study Guide Name: _____Tom Parrott_____ Chapter 2 Study Guide Key Terms: Functional approach – Understanding COMM by examining the purpose of messages and how they move through an organization. Organizational communication system – Related pieces of an organization that work together and with the environment to create and shape organizational events. Meaning-centered approach – Process for creating shared realities that in turn become organizing, decision making, sense making, influence, and culture. Communication as constitutive process – A process through which meaning is developed, as well as social production of perceptions, identities, social structures and affective responses. Guiding Questions: You are interested in studying organizations using a functional approach. What are 2 specific issues you decide to focus on? Why? I would look at the messages that are delivered between the boss and employees. The purpose of the messages from the person in charge can be the driving force for a company, because they can either uplift the employees and help them, or they can tear down the employees and harm them. I would also look at the messages that are being delivered between employees for the same reason as above. If messages going between employees are positive and helpful, then the company will most likely be thriving. If the messages are purely competitive and meant to be solely to win in the dog-eat-dog business world, then the company will experience issues at the employee level. What is distortion in organizational communication? Describe an incident in which message distortion occurred in an organization you belong to.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
